Ministers Endorse Literature and Book Protection Law
The Ministerial Committee on Legislation endorsed, Sunday, an emergency bill, co-sponsored by Culture and Sports Minister Limor Livnat, which would allocate three million shekels from the ministry's budget to promote Hebrew literature through the "Israel Reads" project, which includes literature and poetry events for the public throughout the country. During the law's three years, data will be collected to gauge its effectiveness.
In conjunction with Hebrew Book Week, Livnat and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met with writers who spoke of distress, Sunday afternoon. They said books should be reasonably priced but allow an author to make a living. Industry, Commerce and Labor Minister Carmel Shama-Hacohen presented the committee with statistics that showed new commercial titles were not on the increase and that department stores were putting book stores out of business
